  20. When I was shopping around for different providers (when I switched
  21. from a shell account to a SLIP/PPP account), I tried logging onto
  22. various providers' data lines.  I was amazed at the variance.  One
  23. would only connect at 24000; another one caused the modem to make the
  24. noise indicative of a high-speed connection -- yet only connect at
  25. 9600.  With my present provider, I get 28800 connections almost all
  26. the time.  So check around -- the problem could be on the other end.
